What is Easter all about?

We all know it is Easter time – a quick visit to the supermarket will show that. Chocolate rabbits and eggs sit side by side with hot cross buns. But that’s not the real meaning of Easter.

At this time of year we think of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This was no ordinary man – he was the son of God, and the son of Mary, who lived a sinless life, though he was tempted in every way, just as we are. It is through this sacrifice of Jesus that we can have the hope of salvation, and life forever on this earth which will be made perfect.

Why did Jesus’ death happen this way? Why so much suffering? Between God and man there is a huge gulf – God cannot even be tempted to sin, but we humans are tempted, and do give in to our sinful desires. God is too pure to look on sin, so he gave his son Jesus as a perfect sin offering to redeem us. Now Jesus is the mediator between people and God. What a wonderful gift! How have you responded?

Join us at Easter for a special Good Friday service, “The death of the shepherd” at 10am. This service will have Bible readings, songs and meditations about the death of Jesus, and will be followed by light refreshments.

On Easter Sunday join us at 11:30am to learn about the topic “Why the empty tomb?”. You may come early for a hot drink, or stay on afterwards for a light lunch.

A variety of books, booklets, DVDs and videos about Jesus is available from the Bible Education Centre shop and library, as detailed below and over the page.

  • Easter Sunday – 11:30am April 4, “Why the empty tomb?”

Who moved the stone? (Book)

This book was written with the intention of disproving the resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, as the author did the research necessary for writing the book, he found that the evidence supported the biblical story. Read this well-researched book to find out what convinced him to change his mind.

Available for loan from our library ($5 once-off joining fee) or as a secondhand book ($1 and $2 copies).

The Mighty Saviour (Comic book)

Would you like to introduce your children to the Bible’s Easter message, but they don’t like reading thick and difficult books?

Here is an answer! This paperback comic book is simple and fun to read. The pictures help teac h the message to kids.

At only $3, this comic is very affordable.

Other comics are also available covering a range of different Bible stories.

The cross of Christ (Booklet)

This 20-page booklet speaks of the crucifixion of Jesus, and discusses why it was necessary for the sinless son of God to die in such a painful manner. It speaks of the result of this suffering for us, if we will respond to God’s plan of salvation.

This booklet is free.

The Easter Story (video)

This video is aimed at children, though adults might like to watch too! It is a simple introduction to the message of the saving work of Jesus, who died a cruel death by crucifixion, though he did not deserve it, as he never sinned. However, that was not the end of the story, as God raised him from the dead. He still lives now, and is sitting at the right hand of God Almighty in heaven, ready to return to earth soon.

Video may be borrowed from our library ($5 once-off joining fee).

Introducing Jesus (DVD)

This DVD clearly teaches the basic facts about Jesus, taken straight from the Bible. It explains why the Lord Jesus Christ is unique, who ever lived.

This DVD provides a choice of viewing in any of 3 languages: English, Russian and Chinese. A 36-page Study Guide is included.
